A healthcare proxy is a legal document by which a patient appoints another individual to make medical decisions on their behalf, so long as the patient is incapacitated and unable to speak and make decisions for themselves (e.g. due to injury, being placed in an artificially induced coma, or otherwise). Depending on the permissions they are given by the patient, proxies may or may not be restricted as to the decisions they can make for the patient, and may have access to the patient's health records. Should the patient regain the ability to make their own decisions, they may revoke the proxy. Absent proxies, medical decisions on behalf of an incapacitated patient are made by healthcare professionals.
